Chillingham Castle’s Haunted History
Chillingham Castle’s history is shaped by its position on the Anglo-Scottish border, which exposed it to frequent battles and violence. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, English armies used the castle as a base. King Edward I even stayed there in 1298 before the Battle of Falkirk. This period began the castle’s most violent chapter, especially in how Scottish prisoners were treated.
Records show that many prisoners were executed inside the castle. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of Scots died in the dungeon and oubliette. The dungeon is a dark, cramped room where prisoners were left to die from hunger or injuries. A grate in the floor leads to a ‘murder pit’ where human bones have been found.
Much of the castle’s cruel reputation comes from John Sage, also called John Dragfoot. He was once a lieutenant under Edward I, but after being wounded, he became the castle’s torturer.
For about three years, he is said to have tortured around 50 people each week. He used devices like the rack, the iron maiden, and a barrel lined with nails. When the border wars ended, Sage reportedly ordered Scottish prisoners to be burned in the castle courtyard.
The Grey family owned the castle for centuries and had a violent history. Records show that eight family members were executed for treason, sometimes by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. Their heads were often put on display at the castle gates or in London to warn others.
In the 18th century, the castle’s troubles changed from war to personal loss. Lady Mary Berkeley, married to Lord Grey of Wark, was left behind when her husband ran off with her sister. Lady Mary died in 1719, said to be from a broken heart, and her husband never came back.
During World War II, the castle was used as army barracks. Soldiers burned much of the wood inside for warmth, leaving the building in ruins after the war. It stayed that way until 1982, when Sir Humphry Wakefield started restoring it. During the work, several human remains were found hidden behind walls and under the floors.

Local Legends
Many legends try to explain the origins of the castle’s most famous ghosts. These stories are a big part of Northumbrian folklore and are supported by artifacts found during the castle’s renovation.
The Radiant Boy (The Blue Boy)
The story of the Radiant Boy is probably the castle’s most famous legend. For centuries, guests in the Pink Room have reported hearing a child crying at midnight. After the cries, a blue light would appear, showing a young boy in blue Victorian-style clothes.
In the early 1900s, while renovating the thick walls of the Pink Room, workers found the bones of a young boy and a man. Pieces of blue cloth were found with the child’s remains.
According to legend, the boy was sealed alive inside the wall. After his remains were buried in a nearby churchyard, people said the sightings stopped. However, guests still report seeing ‘blue flashes’ in the room.
The Curse of the Spanish Witch
Another legend tells of a Spanish Witch who was brought to the castle and executed. Before she died, she supposedly cursed the castle and anyone who took something from it.
The Torture Chamber now shows items that visitors have mailed back. Many of these people sent letters describing bad luck, money problems, or accidents that happened after they took a small object or stone from the castle.
The Execution of John Sage
The story of John Sage’s death is just as violent as his life. He was reportedly lynched by a mob at the castle after killing his lover, Elizabeth Charlton, in a rage. The tale says the mob cut off his fingers, toes, and nose while he was still hanging. People now say his ghost haunts the Torture Chamber, where visitors feel a strong sense of evil and sometimes smell rotting flesh.
Reported Ghosts
Besides the ghosts tied to legends, staff and visitors often report seeing other spirits:
- Lady Mary Berkeley, known as the Grey Lady, is usually recognized by the sound of a silk dress rustling in the halls. Unlike other ghosts, she is often felt as a ‘cold chill’ passing through people.
- The White Lady is often seen in the Inner Pantry. Stories say a footman guarding the silver was asked by a pale woman for water. When he turned to help, he found the room locked and the woman gone. Some think she was poisoned.
- The Voices in the Library: In the castle’s library, visitors often hear the voices of two men engaged in a quiet conversation. The voices are described as being inaudible in detail but clear in tone. They reportedly stop immediately if anyone attempts to locate the source.
- Eleanor – She is said to haunt the Chapel. She appears to be a girl about 9 years old, with dark, tangled hair and a dirty white dress. Some say she was a prisoner who died from mistreatment.

Paranormal Activity
Paranormal activity at Chillingham Castle is known for being intense and frequent. Many events follow a pattern, like footsteps or the rustle of fabric, and occur even when no one is around.
But in the Torture Chamber and Dungeons, people often report spirits that seem to react to visitors. Activity is highest in winter, with many witnesses seeing ‘shadow people’ in the courtyard and feeling sudden, sharp drops in temperature near the oubliette.
Notable Investigations
Chillingham Castle has attracted several well-known investigations:
- Most Haunted (2002): Yvette Fielding and psychic Derek Acorah led a team that spent 24 hours in the castle. They reported a lot of activity in the Edward I Room and the Torture Chamber.
- Ghost Hunters International (2008): Robb Demarest, Dustin Pari, and their team used thermal cameras and EMF meters in their investigation. They found strong, unexplained energy, especially in the lower parts of the castle.
- Richard Felix: This historian and paranormal researcher has studied the castle many times, looking at the connection between the discovery of human remains and the ‘Blue Boy’ hauntings.
