Hoia-Baciu Forest’s Haunted History

For centuries, locals have feared the Hoia-Baciu Forest, but it only started to attract international scientific attention in the mid-1900s. According to local tradition, the forest has always been seen as a place of evil, with its reputation going back to times of conflict in Transylvania.

One of the most significant historical claims involves the slaughter of hundreds of Romanian peasants within the woods. According to folklore, these individuals were murdered by unknown assailants, and their spirits were never at rest, bound to the trees where they fell.

The forest became widely known in the 1950s, when biologist Alexandru Sift began recording strange lights and magnetic anomalies. The most famous event happened on August 18, 1968, when military technician Emil Barnea took photos of a disc-shaped object above the Round Meadow. Barnea lost his job after reporting what he saw, but experts later studied the photos and found no signs they had been altered.

During the 1900s, the forest earned its “Bermuda Triangle” nickname because of several mysterious disappearances. The most well-known case is about a shepherd, whose name the forest now bears, who went into the woods with 200 sheep.

Neither he nor his flock was ever found, and no trace was left behind. This story led many locals to believe the forest is a portal or a place where time works differently.

Besides disappearances, the forest is also known for causing physical harm. At different times, people have left the woods with burns, bad rashes, and headaches they did not have before. Studies in the late 1900s found natural radioactive thorium in the soil and methane leaks, which some believe may cause the strange symptoms and hallucinations reported by visitors.

Local Legends

The Hoia-Baciu Forest is home to many stories and legends that have been shared for generations in Transylvania. These tales try to explain the strange things people see and feel in the woods. While science points to things like soil or magnetic fields, local folklore blames restless spirits and a thin barrier between worlds.

The Vanishing of the Shepherd Baciu

The main legend about the forest is about the shepherd Baciu, after whom the area is named. Locals say he went into the forest with 200 sheep, planning to cross to a nearby market or pasture. He was an experienced woodsman who knew the area well.

But neither the shepherd nor his sheep ever came out of the forest. Villagers searched everywhere but found no tracks, blood, wool, or equipment. Because there was no evidence at all, people started to believe the forest had “swallowed” them. This story is why many local herders avoid the area.

The Reappearing Child and the Five-Year Time Slip

Another well-known story from Cluj-Napoca is about a five-year-old girl who wandered into the forest while playing. Even though many people searched for her, including police and volunteers, she was thought to be dead after several weeks.

Five years later, the girl reportedly walked out of the forest and came back to her village. People said she was wearing the same clothes she had on when she disappeared, and they looked clean and untouched.

Strangely, the girl had not aged at all during those five years and did not remember any time passing. When asked, she said she thought she had only been in the woods for a few moments. Researchers often use this story to suggest the forest might have areas where time works differently.

The Legend of the Ghost Bride

People say the forest is haunted by a spirit called the Woman in White or the Ghost Bride. The most common version of the story is that a young woman was killed in the woods the night before her wedding.

Another version says she ended her own life after her fiancé was killed in a local fight. People often see her early in the morning as a see-through entity in a torn white dress.

Locals believe she is a protective or grieving spirit. She is not usually linked to the aggressive “pushing” or “scratching” that happens in the clearing. Instead, she is said to guide lost people to the forest’s edge, disappearing once they are safe.

The Massacre of the Peasants

A darker story says the forest’s evil comes from a massacre of Romanian peasants. The legend claims that during a time of unrest or invasion, many locals hid deep in the forest.

Soldiers found them and killed them all. The story says their bodies were left unburied, and the ground took in their suffering. Visitors sometimes say they hear marching or distant screams, even when the forest is quiet. Many people connect this legend to the “dark energy” in the Round Meadow, believing the spirits are strongest there.

The Legend of the Round Meadow (Poiana Rotundă)

The clearing is a real place, but it has its own legends about how it came to be. Some locals believe the meadow was made by a powerful strike from the sky or that it is a landing spot for alien craft.

The legend says that no matter how many seeds are planted or how much fertilizer is used, nothing will grow in the “perfect circle” of the meadow. Some older villagers say the clearing was once a cursed ritual site for ancient cults, and that magic was used to keep the forest from growing back.

Reported Ghosts

People often describe the ghosts in Hoia-Baciu Forest as non-human or strangely shaped humans. Unlike hauntings that happen in one house, these spirits are seen all over the 250-hectare forest. Witnesses talk about “shadow people” moving quickly between the trees, usually seen out of the corner of their eye.

One unusual part of the stories is the sound of female voices with no visible source. Visitors often hear women giggling or whispering in languages they don’t understand. These sounds are usually paired with the feeling of being watched by many unseen eyes.

In the Round Meadow, many people say they have seen glowing green eyes looking out from the dark trees. Some also report that human faces appear in their photos, even though they did not see them in person when taking the picture.

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal activity in the Hoia-Baciu Forest is characterized by its high intensity and the physical effect it has on the environment. The most important pattern is magnetic interference that causes compasses to spin uncontrollably and electronic devices to drain their batteries within minutes. This activity is most concentrated in the Poiana Rotundă, a circular patch of land where soil tests show no reason for the lack of vegetation.

People often report poltergeist-like events, such as being pushed or scratched by invisible forces. Many also experience missing time, thinking they were in the forest for only minutes when hours have actually passed. The trees show strange growth patterns, twisting in zigzags or spirals rather than growing straight up like others in the area.

Notable Investigations

The forest has been the subject of several professional paranormal investigations. In 2009, the team from the television show Destination Truth, led by Josh Gates, conducted a nighttime investigation. During the shoot, a team member was reportedly thrown across a clearing by an unseen force, resulting in physical injury and the temporary cessation of the investigation.

In 2013, the Ghost Adventures team—Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin—visited for a Halloween special. They recorded Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) of a woman’s voice. They filmed a camera operator being knocked down in the Round Meadow.

Adrian Pătruț, a chemistry professor and president of the Romanian Society of Parapsychology, has spent many years studying the forest’s magnetic and light anomalies. He found that these strange events are real and repeatable, but there is still no clear scientific explanation.

The Geometry of the Trees

One of the most disturbing physical features of the Hoia-Baciu Forest is the atypical growth patterns of the trees.

While scientific theories suggest environmental factors like wind or soil composition, the specific nature of the warping is highly unusual. Many of the trees, primarily beeches and oaks, grow in spirals that turn clockwise or bend at sharp, unnatural angles before continuing upward.

Botanists say these trees are about 200 years old, but they look much younger or seem stunted. Some even look like they have been burned from the inside, even though there is no sign of a forest fire.

Paranormal researchers often connect these strange tree patterns to energy vortex theories. They suggest that the same forces causing people to see orbs and shadow figures are also twisting the forest itself.
