Marion Military Institute’s Haunted History

The Marion Military Institute (MMI) stands on a site with a long history of medical emergencies and wartime deaths. The school began in 1842 as Howard College.

During the Civil War, from 1863 to 1865, the campus was taken over for military purposes. Two main buildings that still exist, Lovelace Hall (formerly known as the South Barracks) and the Chapel, were used as the Breckenridge Military Hospital.

Lovelace Hall, built by architect Noah K. Davis in 1854, served as a main hospital ward for wounded soldiers from both sides during the Civil War. Records from the MMI show the hospital was especially busy after the Battle of Selma in April 1865.

As General James H. Wilson’s Union troops passed through, injured soldiers arrived by horse-drawn carts and trains. Around 80 Confederate and 20 Union soldiers are believed to have died in these buildings at that time.
